Sedation Dentistry

undefinedDepending on the procedure you need and your general health, using sedation is an option. The nice thing about this approach is that you will feel relaxed and comfortable while we set about improving your dental health.

Many of our patients prefer this approach since it eliminates the need to use needles for an injection. The sedation is just enough to make you comfortable and feel as if no time is passing at all. It’s not unusual for patients to begin feeling the effects and not remember anything else until after the work is done and we begin the process of reversing the sedation.

When sedation is the right choice for you, our team of trained orthodontists will monitor you closely even after the procedure is over. That’s because we want to make sure you are aware enough to leave our facility and remain safe. As part of our post-procedure evaluation, we will ask you questions, make a note of your reflexes and in general make sure the sedation effects have subsided enough for you to function. Typically, we will ask that you remain with us for at least a half-hour after your procedure.

Our recommendation is that you take it easy for the remainder of the day. This is in line with what most Richmond Hill family dentists would recommend. Avoid any tasks that require a great deal of concentration. You are free to eat whatever you like, watch television, or listen to music. If you feel the need to go out for any reason, don’t go alone. Have someone go with you for walks, quick trips to

While you will be able to manage most tasks on your own, we recommend that you have a friend or family member accompany you. After any type of sedation dentistry, expect some minor effects to linger for a few hours. Once we release you, your loved one can do the driving and ensure you get home safely. If you do decide to go back out for any reason, leave the driving to your loved one for the remainder of the day. By the next morning, the sedation will be out of your system and you’ll be as sharp as ever.

If you notice any queasiness in the hours following your procedure, let us know. While it is rare, some people do experience nausea. Avoid spicy foods and go with bland choices that contain the type of nutrients you need. Our team will provide some suggestions about what to eat and drink. Sticking with the list will further decrease the potential for nausea.

While you may not be aware of the time passing or the particulars of the procedure, the sedation allows us to keep you at a level of consciousness that ensures your safety while also making it simple for you to cooperate.

Before using sedation, we’ll want to know about medications you take and health issues that you currently manage. This helps us to know if sedation is an option or if some other approach would be in your best interest.

Contact us today and schedule an appointment. After an exam, we’ll go over treatment options and make sure that you have all the information necessary to make an informed decision.
